ANNURSNAC HILL

This 1960s Deck House is located at the top of Annursnac Hill in Concord. When a young family bought it in 2018, they were enamored with the wonderful views, exposed framing, deck ceiling, and classic mid-century modern design. They wanted to update strategic areas of the home but take a light touch, keeping the overall existing character intact.

Our interventions primarily included updating and reconfiguring all of the home’s bathrooms, kitchen, and primary suite. In addition, we replaced some windows, updated lighting, and clarified the interior material palette by re-finishing the various wood elements and adding black stained wood elements and natural stone (over time, the existing oak floors, cedar ceiling, fir timbers, mahogany window and door jambs had all weathered to the same nondescript dark brown - we lightened the floors and painted the timbers dark gray so the warm mahogany trim and cedar ceiling could take center stage).

The kitchen floor is covered in a porcelain tile from Stonesource that resembles concrete. The Poliform cabinetry is in Black Elm with a singular panel of White Oak on the island with honed Calacatta Marble on the countertops and backsplashes. Paneled appliances keep the lines unobstructed. Black Sonneman track lighting provides even light across working surfaces with minimal disruption to the ceiling. A skylight mapped to the kitchen island lets daylight into the center of the space. We reconfigured the kitchen to include a pantry and eliminate an unused exterior door, thus opening the plan by a meaningful few feet so the family can comfortably use the kitchen together.

The primary suite was similarly re-configured to maximize useful space. We included a large bathroom with separate water closet, walk-in shower, freestanding soaking tub, and custom white oak double vanity with soft curves and a fluted texture The his and her vessel sinks are made from Calacatta Marble. We consolidated stray closets into a single walk-in closet outfitted with Grey Oak Poliform cabinetry. We replaced the windows in the primary suite with new insulated Acorn Deck house mahogany windows, added a custom white oak niche behind the bed, and a custom white oak floating dresser in place of the original reach-in closet. The room is carpeted in a grey wool broadloom that has the look and feel of a Tatami mat.

The new powder room includes a floor to ceiling marble backsplash, a pair of Tassle Sconces in aged brass from Apparatus Studio, a custom Black Elm floating vanity, a black hexagon tile floor and a new skylight spilling light into the room.
