the fencade

Home ReSource is a non-profit in Missoula MT that recycles building materials and educates the community about sustainable building practices. The “fencade”, (as it is dubbed by the crew at HR), shelters materials from the wind and snow, and acts as a security fence between the materials yard and the busy road.

This project was designed drawing from a specific stockpile of donated materials that Home ReSource had sitting in their yard. The design process for this project was very nearly like playing with a pile of tinker-toys: All of the lumber, trusses, sliding glass door panels, and metal roofing were recycled from decommissioned buildings or surplus materials brought in by local contractors and homeowners. The only materials that had to be purchased were concrete for the foundations, and some steel structural components.

As part of our design we proposed that a bus stop be incorporated into the end of the building to provide some shelter and an place to rest for folks waiting for the bus.  The local transit authority relocated their official bus-stop to stop in this new location.
