HFA is working with Agency Landscape and Planning for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to convert an abandoned rail line once known as the Boonton Line into a unique, linear state park that moves through some of the most densely populated communities in the country. This linear park will provide vital access to green landscapes and recreational activities to communities that very badly need it. In addition, the improvements will manage stormwater, reduce flooring, and enhance animal habitats.
Working in support of Agency L+P alongside NV5, Hive Public Space, Townsquare, Ummo, Creative Urban Alchemy, a broad team of ecology, engineering, architecture, economic, and engagement experts — and following on the heels of Agency-led co-planning with community members in the eight municipalities that the Greenway will run through - HFA is designing a number of architectural interventions and amenities.
This highly collaborative process has led to designs for both landscape and architecture inspired by the history of the site. The Boonton Line once carried ice and raw goods from lakes in New Jersey to ports in New York City. The idea of rails, railroad ties, and ice have been reinterpreted into swooping paths, walls of corten steel, and wooden trellises that emerge from the ground to create structures and spaces that facilitate inhabitation and recreation. HFA has designed overlooks, shade trellises, benches, bathroom rest stations, and a large stage for performance - all articulated in cor-ten steel and thermally modified ash. Modified shipping containers will provide the project with pre-fab storage facilities and bathrooms.
This exciting one-of-a-kind project will be New Jersey's first new State Park since 2006!
