measure house

Measure House is a new home for a young musician on eight gently sloping acres near Tanglewood in Massachusetts. Inspired by minimalist musical ideas and syncopated rhythmic patterns, the house deploys structure and space to create a play of light and time across days and seasons. A two foot grid organizes the house, setting up control lines and regular intervals against which variations in openings and scale introduce eclipses, unfoldings, openings to - and shutterings of - light. Through this composition of elements one becomes keenly aware of the movement of the sun, the rotation of our planet, the warmth of winter angles, the shade bestowed in summer, the sounds of nature. Built to extremely high standards, the home is expected to be at or near net-zero in it’s energy requirements, further integrating the home into the environment at every level.
